RECREATION

who we are:

The Recreation Group brings together outdoor enthusiasts, including longtime residents, second homeowners, and members of town committees (Parks, Conservation and Beautification).

what we do:

Our group is tasked with exploring ways to enhance Londonderry’s four-season recreation for both our residents and visitors.

our goals for this year:

1.  Design and print a physical town brochure with a map of bike and hike routes and secondly create and curate an online resource of town trails and routes for non-motorized multi use activities.  The online resource would be linked to a central website for Londonderry tourism and include additional links for resources such as Strava, Catamount Trail Association, Mountain Valley Trails Association, the Green Mountain Club, etc. The timeline for brochure development is summer 2021. Budget for production of the brochure is being prepared. The creation of a basic online resource could be completed by the end of summer 2021.

2.  Optimize trail access and connectivity across North and South Londonderry and link Londonderry with other mountain towns and trails systems. Short term goals include initial work to map the possible routes, identify landowners and create a Landowner Approach Packet with model access agreements; initial objectives to be met by fall, 2021.  Conversations have been held with Slate Valley Trails Network organizers and VMBA will be approached to learn about creating a chapter for our trail network. An additional goal is to design a trail maintenance program.

3. Initiate a Londonderry Winter Festival, a signature winter event celebrating the mid- to late winter season. This event would be created in concert with a season opening Ullr Festival that would be run by Magic Mountain. A first annual event would be slated for late February, early March 2022. Current work involves selection of activities and locations, as well as naming the event.

  • The timeline for brochure development is expected during summer, 2021. We are working with the Windham Regional Commission to map the trails and routes. The creation of a basic online resource, linked to the One Londonderry website, is expected by late summer, 2021.

  • Conversations have been held with Slate Valley Trails Network organizers and VMBA will be approached to learn about creating a chapter for our trail network. We hope to enlist volunteers with legal and grant writing expertise, and trail building and maintenance expertise.

  • Current work on the Winter Festival involves coordination with Magic Mountain’s winter events, selection of activities and locations, as well as naming the event.
